Opposition Questions ODPM’s Effectiveness
Opposition Leader Dr. Keith Rowley is insisting that Trinidad and Tobago is not prepared to deal with a disaster.
His comments came during a media conference held at the office of the leader of the Opposition in Port of Spain on Wednesday.
Dr. Rowley was at the time commenting on the flooding and landslide that cause massive destruction in the western part of the island last weekend.
The Opposition Leader said there was a lack of coordination on the part of the various response agencies and questioned the effectiveness of the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management.
He said the various agencies also fell short when it came to the way they treated with flood victims.
The opposition leader said the Prime Minister’s declaration of the area being a disaster area is also cause for concern.
He believed that the declaration would have brought urgency to the situation.
According to the Opposition Leader, some of the affected persons received nothing they needed.
Last Saturday, the nation woke up to news of massive flooding and landslides in Diego Martin, maraval and Carenage.
Heavy overnight showers caused the Diego Martin river and the Maraval river to burst their banks.
Two people lost their lives while many others are left counting their losses.
