Centre For Socially Displaced Persons Not A Permanent Place Of Residence
The Ministry of the People and Social Development is making it clear that the centre for socially displaced persons is not a permanent place of residence.
Port-of-Spain’s Mayor, Louis Lee Sings, recently accusations that the ministry and the Housing Development Corporation of being the main factors for social displacement in the capital.
He called the ministry’s policy for dealing with people in HDC homes “oppressive”.
Adding that socially displaced persons are being kicked out of the centre by ministry officers.
This ministry stated today that the centre is to assist persons with somewhere to sleep at nights, a bath and a meal.
Persons are able to get assistance from a social workers to rehabilitate them into the society.
They say that some persons have been occupying the centre for as much as 11 years and were given sufficient notice find alternative accommodation.
They say that if persons stay for such an extended time in the systems, they can not remove those who currently occupy the streets.
