Gopeesingh Encorages More Youth Involvement In Calypso And Soca

The Minister is encouraging more young people to participate in the annual competition.
Education Minister Dr. Tim Gopeesingh attributes the stardom of soca stars like Machel Montano to their start in the National Junior Calypso Monarch competition. He credits the competition with giving young calypsonians a stage on which to showcase their talent as well as giving them exposure.
According to the Minister, calypso motivates youths to practice critical thinking. The political and social commentary, he says, hinges on evaluating and interpreting social issues.
